Can You Buy a House or Car After Filing Bankruptcy?

I hear from my chapter 7 Bankruptcy clients: “In the first week after filing bankruptcy, I received more applications for credit cards and car loans than I’ve ever seen before!”

Yes, you will be able to get credit after filing bankruptcy! Buy a car, buy a house, take out a loan…

Many of my blogs start with the same line: “Contrary to popular belief…” But that’s because there is SO MUCH incorrect information about bankruptcy, and one of the primary goals of this blog is to educate the public about bankruptcy truths!

*Today’s lesson: You are able to get credit after a bankruptcy*

You are permitted to buy houses, buy cars, get credit cards, take out loans… There is no rule stopping any of this stuff.

In fact, I hear from my chapter 7 clients: “In the first week after filing bankruptcy, I received more applications for credit cards and car loans than I’ve ever seen before!”

The point I’m making is that the opportunity for credit will be there in droves. Now, SHOULD you incur these loans? That’s a whole different conversation. But again, the point is to debunk the false idea that you aren’t permitted to “have credit” or “buy cars and houses” post-bankruptcy.

And the reason I’m bringing it up is because I hear this fear from people all the time: “But if I file I won’t be able to buy a car for ten years.” THIS IS FALSE!!
